macbook late 2008 taken off lcd screen and connect to external monitor but no signal with dvi

I have a macbook late 2008 without the LCD screen, because I took it off, and wanted to try to connect to my acer monitor via mini display port to dvi. Unfortunately whenever I try to put my monitor into the dvi mode, it won't show up and says no signal. However, the computer still works normally, and I have voice over on, which kind of helps, but kind of doesn't. At the same time I'm trying to install Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.3 with the DVD because I accidentally deleted the operating system along with the recover mode before. So I don't know if it's the monitor that's not displaying the screen, or is it my computer without its led display that's not making it show. I would appreciate to hear everyone's feedback on how to fix this issue for me. Thanks
