Photos for Mac

Photos on Catalina and referenced files

I have a large photo library. My last few years of photos are all imported into my photo library and sync with iCloud etc… A very nice way to work. My many years of photos prior to that are in my library, but are not imported into the photo library, rather they are "referenced" files. The originals stay on the external drive, independent of photo's library. I'd like to move these files to a new drive (the drive they are on is getting old). If I copy the exact same file structure, and name the new drive the same as the old name, will the photos library know where the referenced files are, or do I need to do something else to move them to a different drive?

Thanks in advance for your ideas on this topic.
