MacBook Air

turning the mac display off

whenever i don't use my MacBook Air for a certain period of time, instead of switching on by itself when I open it, and taking me to the lock screen to use my touch id to open it, I have to press the on button (the touch id button to turn it on), and then I have to enter my password again and all. On my old MacBook it would just switch on and off as I opened and closed the lid, is there no way to do that? I've played around in the energy saver section in the settings but I haven't been successful. I've also searched for it online and couldn't find anything.
