iCloud on my Mac

ICloud email verification code problem.

After a restore to my MacBook Pro due to start-up issues I am having to reconnect to iCloud. All is Ok until the email verification stage. I get the email from apple with the six numbers, put them in but then get " this email is not available, choose a different address". It is the correct address and I don't have another one ! What can I do ?

Or is it a long wait in the phone queue to speak to an apple advisor ?

Any help much appreciated.
