Voiceover won't turn off on iPod Nano

Recently my iPod Nano started responding badly – the voiceover will come on and then continue announcing the titles of my playlist songs. Often it will follow by going into shuffle mode.

I have checked the Settings >general>accessibility and Voiceover is off.

I have checked Music > Shake to Shuffle to make sure that is off.

My iPod behavior is very similar to this community post:

I have tried Reset Settings – that sometimes turns the voiceover off for a time, but the problem always returns.

I have checked to see that I have the latest update. It is behaving like a bug was introduced that something in an update is not compatible with my old (7+ years?) device.

I'm getting ready to initialize the device via iTunes.
