5 Bricked Apple Configurator Updated iPads

I have 5 iPads that I have connected to a MacMini that has Apple Configurator 2 installed. I made them managed devices, but did not import them into Apple Deployment.

I added wallpaper, apps, and changed the icon layout.

I then selected them all and right clicked to Update to Latest iOS only.

I left for the day.

I came in this morning, and all 5 were sitting at a black screen and they were very warm to the touch. We had to Volume Button / Home button to get them back to the restore screen where it's saying to plug into iTunes. These iPads were not ever attached to iTunes.

What caused this? I am pretty sure I know how to stand them back to normal, but what in the process caused this? How do I avoid it?

Edit: I logged into the MacMini and found the following message: iOS cannot be restored on 5 iPads. The operation couldn't be completed. (AMRestoreErrorDomain error 10 – Failed to handle message type StatusMsg) [AMRestoreErrorDomain – 0xA (10)]

The iPads are now showing up as Unknown Device.
