macOS Mojave

Time Machine using unreasonable disk space

I have Time Machine running on a Mac Mini under Mojave. The mini has a 500Gb drive but I'm only using 46Gb. Nevertheless, Get Info on the Backups.backupdb directory says I am using 4.2Tb. There are 56 backups in the mini backup directory. If I had a full backup for each it would only be 2.6Tb. How can I find where the wasted space is going and how do I get it back? I suspect something weird happened in perhaps only one backup but I don't know how to find it.
