Built-In Optical Drive Doesn't Work Suddenly

I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2012 with a built-in optical drive. I am running Sierra 10.12.5. My optical drive was working perfectly up until a few weeks ago when it suddenly stopped. It does not respond to inserting discs (no sounds are made, no attempt to grab disc, nothing). When I press the "eject" key on my keyboard, no "eject" icon is displayed on the screen. It's as if there is no longer a drive in there. Any suggestions? I have tried restarting the laptop and all that jazz but haven't been able to get the drive back up or to get my computer to even recognize my pressing of the "eject" key.

Thanks for any and all help.
