OS X Yosemite

Updating os

I currently own a MacBook Pro est 2013 or so and it is still running on OS Yosemite. Would it be risky to try and update it to the most recent OS? Would I have to do it in stages by updating to one update up or to Sierra before trying to update? The reason I need to update it is because my phone is not responding and is threatening to restore back to factory settings but I don't want to lose some photos I took recently which I don't have synced with anywhere. I think I could solve this by getting the newest iTunes on my laptop which I can only achieve by updating the laptop. Thank you and I appreciate any advice.
