External SSD drive

I have a late 2015 imac that is showing its age a bit. Overall it works for my needs, but I'd like to consider reasonably priced, easy options for making it faster.

It doesn't have easily accessible RAM or hard drive, both would require pulling the screen off, etc. Don't want to do that and don't want to spend the money to have it done.

My question is simple. If I bought an external SSD drive big enough to install MacOS and run my applications, and boot from that, would I notice any improved performance, even if just a little?

Thanks in advance.
