How to unfreeze due to too little storage for Mac OS Catalina?

I automatically clicked to update to Mac OS Catalina, (and now realized it was a foolish move) having locked myself out of my macbook due to too little free space to install the update (good to know now!). Im now stuck in a loop as i cannot get the update, nor by pressing Command+R I get anywhere as Im not sure what the concequences will be. I did a backup with time machine a few weeks ago – but im still stuck as some of these options are a bit unclear to me. What really happens when I agree to delete everything and allow the time machine backup to take over? HELP HELP HELP.. This is really not useful, Apple!
