consequences of changing Sharing & Permissions in Info

This all started when I ran across an Apple Community discussion https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2210858 Posted on Oct 25, 2009 1:07 PM

I wondered if I was changing items in Sharing & Permissions without really knowing what I was doing. Not only that, but was I changing in my Home Folder.

I read the article Resolve issues caused by changing the permissions of items in your home folder, https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203538. Some of the issues in that article I have experienced, i.e.

When saving changes to an item, you get a message that the file is locked or you don't have permission to save.

Your Mac performs slowly.

I previously read the articles

Change permissions for files, folders, or disks on Mac https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-permissions-for-files-folders-or-disks-mchlp1203/mac

If you don’t have permission to open a file or folder on Mac https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/permission-open-a-file-folder-mac-mchlp1038/mac

If you don’t have permission to use files on a Mac disk https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/permission-files-a-mac-disk-mchlp1204/mac

With the last two articles I was under the impression that it was okay to change permissions.

  1. Now I am confused. Is it a good idea to change permissions at all?
  2. Would it be a good idea to resolve the changes possibly in the Home Folder?

I humbly ask for assistance with my conundrum.

Thank you ahead of time.
