Photos for Mac

Getting started with Photos

Hello! I've had my MacBook Pro for about 7 years, and iPhones that whole time, but have always organised my photos in the Finder, using my own folders/file structures (a folder for each year, then inside a folder each month and/or specific events), as this is how I started to do it many years ago when I had my first laptop, so I would have just transferred to my Mac and then continued to add to this in the same way.

I would like to start using Photos and have some questions.

Firstly, are there any advantages or disadvantages to having Photos access my photos as referenced files, or would it be better to allow Photos to copy all of my photos to its own library and then delete my own set up?

Secondly, are my photos safe if I did use the Photos library management? If I chose this method, how would I go about backing up my photos to my partners Windows computer if I wanted to? And should I change my mind in the future, how easy would it be to transfer my photos out of the Photos library and then to organise them myself again?

Thanks in advance for any help/advice!
