Apple SuperDrive isn't recognized by iMac

I purchased an iMac this summer and an Apple SuperDrive external CD. when I connect the SuperDrive via a USB port, it pulls in the disk and I can hear the drive activate and read the disk I have inserted. However, I cannot find the drive in Finder or anywhere else. The drive shows up in the Disk Utility and says "uninitialized" under the name. I can see in the disk utility that it has identified the desk I have inserted (a commercial software product I want to install) but I can't figure out how to access the disk to install the software.
