Big black flower superimposed on my screen

I've got an old Mac laptop, that I use every so often to back files up on. Today was backup day, and when I opened it up, this was what I found:

Big black flower superimposed on my screen

I restarted multiple times in every different manner, no change. If I run my finger over parts of the Image, something like bristles appears all around the black part, but quickly fades away… sometimes the bristles are red. The system doesn't "see" the image, because it doesn't appear on screen caps; I had to photograph it with the webcam from my desktop.

This is NOT an image from my screensaver, not that it matters because when I'm done using the laptop I just close it and it turns itself off. It appears to be a flower, but I've never seen this specific image before. As far as I can tell by looking and feeling, there's no physical damage to the screen… And there certainly wasn't anything flower-shaped being stored in there!

As a bonus, Word appears to be permanently on, and there's no way to turn it off; the controls are grayed out, and I can do what looks like a quit in the dock, but it doesn't actually do anything.

Does anyone know what this is and how to fix it?
