What is the difference between Face ID technology and Touch ID

What is the difference between Face ID technology and Touch ID Touch ID is a fingerprint scanner that is widely used in Apple technology. For the first time this thing appeared in 2013 in the iPhone 5S model. Since then, the scanner has been equipped with:

  • iPhone 5s / SE / 6 / 6s / 7/8
  • iPad mini 3/4, iPad Air / 2017/2018 / Pro 9.7 ″ /10.5″/12.9″/li
  • MacBook Pro with TouchBar 2016/2017/2018
  • MacBook Air 2018

iPhone 5S / 6 models / SE, iPad Mini 3 and iPad Air 2 are equipped with the first generation Touch ID sensor, other devices received a more advanced second generation Touch ID. There is no fundamental difference between the generations of the sensor, the second is considered to be faster and more accurate in operation.

The fingerprint scanner integrates into the physical or virtual button on the device and reads the relief of the applied finger, comparing it with the settings stored in the settings.

Touch ID was replaced by Face ID technology in 2017. A special unit True Depth Camera scans the three-dimensional shape of a person’s face and compares it with the existing one.

The technology is self-learning based on neural networks in the smartphone’s processor. This allows the device to recognize the user even with a changed appearance, with a new hairstyle, mustache, beard, etc.

Currently Face ID is used on:

  • iPhone X
  • iPhone Xs / Xs Max
  • iPhone XR
  • iPad Pro 2018

True Depth camera is on the user’s face dense grid of infrared points and accurately determines the distance to each of them. So the system receives a model of the person’s face.

Why do we need these technologies

Both technologies have become a logical development of a banal password lock on smartphones and tablets. Instead of repeating the combination of characters repeatedly, it was enough to put a finger on the sensor or look at the camera to unlock.

With the development of the operating system, Face ID and Touch ID sensors began to be used to confirm purchases, go to protected sections of system settings and to identify in some third-party programs.

At the moment, both systems are considered equally safe and are used for the same tasks in iOS. In macOS, the Touch ID sensor has appeared relatively recently and the system is just beginning to grow in scope with the use of a fingerprint scanner.

Advantages and disadvantages

Each of the systems has its pros and cons. Choosing a device based on the protection system is not practical, you have to put up with the existing system in a particular device.

Touch ID has the following advantages:

  • the system is time-tested, the modules work reliably, and the repair in the event of a breakdown, it is inexpensive (Face ID repair is much more expensive)
  • can be used without looking at the device, convenient to use it at an angle or when the smartphone is on the table (Face ID requires a certain angle between the face and the screen)
  • you can set 5 prints, which in theory allows you to make Up to five different users (Face ID in iOS 12 taught to remember only a couple of faces)

On the Face ID side there are such strengths:

  • more modern protection with a lower probability of breaking
  • does not require a special button / zone on the device
  • you can unlock your smartphone with gloves

Of course, the newer Face technology ID is more progressive and interesting, unfortunately, Cupertinians are in no hurry to implement it in laptops. Now models are actively equipped with Touch IDs in order to give out Face IDs to MacBooks for high-profile innovation in a couple of years.
